Campinha-Bacote’s Culturally Competent Model of Care

About the Project

This learning object was created to supplement a Healthcare in Diverse Population course. This model uses a volcano to illustrate cultural competency as the process through which healthcare professionals endeavor to work within a client’s cultural context. The model is driven by cultural desire and encourages healthcare providers to seek cultural encounters, obtain cultural knowledge, develop skills to conduct culturally sensitive assessments, and develop self-awareness. The model has five specific constructs of cultural competency, which are: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounter, and cultural desire.
